Age-dependent fecundity of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with sublethal doses of gammacyhalothrin BABT

Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was exposed to gammacyhalothrin to study the stimulatory effect of low concentrations of this pyrethroid. The doses studied were 23.4375, 11.7188, 5.8594, 2.9297, 1.4648, 0.7324 mg.litre-1 and water, as control. The third, fourth, and fifth instars of P. nigrispinus were shorter with all the doses of this insecticide. The survival and longevity of this predator was highest with the lowest doses. The oviposition period of P. nigrispinus decreased as the doses increased. The lowest pre-and postoviposition periods were found with 11.7188 mg.litre-1 of gammacyhalothrin. Caffeic acid improves cell viability and protects against DNA damage: involvement of reactive oxygen species and extracellular signal-regulated kinase BJMBR

Hormesis is an adaptive response to a variety of oxidative stresses that renders cells resistant to harmful doses of stressing agents. Caffeic acid (CaA) is an important antioxidant that has protective effects against DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, whether CaA-induced protection is a hormetic effect remains unknown, as is the molecular mechanism that is involved. We found that a low concentration (10 μM) of CaA increased human liver L-02 cell viability, attenuated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-mediated decreases in cell viability, and decreased the extent of H2O2-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Complex Relationships between the Blue Pigment Marennine and Marine Bacteria of the Genus Vibrio ArchiMer

Marennine, the water-soluble blue pigment produced by the marine diatom Haslea ostrearia, is known to display antibacterial activities. Previous studies have demonstrated a prophylactic effect of marennine on bivalve larvae challenged with a pathogenic Vibrio splendidus, suggesting that the blue Haslea is a good candidate for applications in aquaculture as a source of a natural antimicrobial agent. Indeed, the genus Vibrio is ubiquitous in aquaculture ecosystems, and regular events of pathogenic invasion cause some of the biggest losses worldwide. O ácido 2,4-diclorafenóxacético (2,4-D) tem causado efeitos tóxicos em várias culturas cultivadas vizinhas ao local na qual foi destinado, devido à deriva durante sua aplicação. Objetivou-se, nesta pesquisa, avaliar o efeito da deriva simulada por meio de subdoses do herbicida 2,4-D em plantas de pequi (Caryocar brasiliense, Camb.). Testaram-se em blocos completos casualizados com seis repetições as doses de 0; 1,67; 3,35; 6,70; 16,75; 33,50; 67,00 e 134,00 g ha-1 de equivalente ácido do herbicida. A unidade experimental foi de um vaso contendo uma planta de pequi. Effects of 2,4-D Herbicide on Species of the Digitaria Genus Planta Daninha

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the 2,4-D herbicide on the growth and development of Digitaria insularis and Digitaria horizontalis plants under different climatic conditions. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design, with 11 treatments (rates of the herbicide) and four replications. Rate-response curves were determined for the 2,4-D rates of 0, 50.37, 100.75, 201.5, 403, 806, 1,612, 3,224, 6,448, 12,896, and 25,792 g a.i. ha-1. Exploring the Herbicidal and Hormetic Potential of Allelopathic Crops Against Fenoxaprop-Resistant Phalaris minor Planta Daninha

ABSTRACT: Recent increases in the development of herbicide resistance in Phalaris minor worldwide demand alternative non-chemical strategies to control this weed. A series of experiments were conducted under laboratory and greenhouse conditions to explore the herbicidal potential of four allelopathic crops, including maize, rice, sorghum and sunflower, at different concentrations of aqueous extracts (2.5% and 5%), residues (1%, 2% and 4%) and mulches (4, 8, and 12 ton ha-1) against fenoxaprop-resistant P. minor. Aqueous extracts, residues and mulches provided 86-100%, 73-100% and 16-40% control of this resistant weed biotype, respectively. The stimulatory effect of low concentrations of toxic chemicals on organismal metabolism, referred to as hormesis, has been found to be common in the widely used luminescence bioassay. This paper aims to study the hormesis phenomenon in both marine and freshwater luminescent bacteria, named Photobacterium phosphorem and Vibrio qinghaiensis. The effects of Cu (II), Zn (II), Cd (II) and Cr (VI) on luminescence of these two bacteria were studied for 0 to 75 minutes exposure by establishing dose- and time-response curves. A clear hormesis phenomenon was observed in all four testing metals at low concentrations under the condition of luminescence assays.
